We provide free, confidential and professional tax support to people who cannot afford paid tax advice.
For many of our beneficiaries tax is not their only problem, we speak with people who are living on the breadline, with disabilities and mental health issues, who are dealing with bereavement or who are victims of crime and/or abuse. By working closely with other charities we have a wider network and we can support people in need more effectively.
You can call TaxAid if you need help with:
TaxAid does not advise on any DWP benefits (including Tax Credits), council tax, or Limited Companies. TaxAid does not provide tax planning advice, but our advisors can provide guidance on making good tax decisions.
The decision whether to send clients to HMRC or TaxAid needs to take into account HMRC’s service delivery model for people who need extra support, the “Need Extra Support” (NES) service.
Access to NES is initially by telephone, via HMRC’s usual contact number 0300 200 3300. Some advice agencies have direct hand-off arrangements for their clients who meet the criteria for extra help.
HMRC has introduced an online appointment booking form (available nationally) to allow individuals who are unable to use the phone because of a hearing or speech disability to make an appointment http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/tools/visits/index.htm.
TaxAid can help someone if they are unable to pay for the advice or aren’t able to get the help they need.
To decide if they qualify for support from our specialist tax team, we will ask them about their finances and personal circumstances.
We will ask them about their annual income and whether it is below the individual Minimum Income Standard (MIS) currently £28,000 and we will ask about any debts or savings that they have.
We will ask about their personal circumstances as they may be experiencing disadvantages or hardships that makes it difficult for them to get the help they need. We know that there are many reasons that could make it difficult to get help, so please do give us a call and we can discuss their needs and consider their unique circumstances.
We do not provide advice on Corporation Tax (Limited Companies), Tax Planning, Tax Credits, Benefits, Council Tax or non-UK tax issues.
Phone us using our dedicated referral helpline to refer someone who might need our help.
Our website hosts a great deal of information and expertise about the tax industry. You can direct beneficiaries to our website to find information relevant to their issue if it is non-urgent.

We are looking to speak with voluntary sector advisors to see how we can effectively work together. By extending our network we can better help our beneficiaries and spread the word about partner charities and the help that they can give.
